Chapter 184

-Ava’s POV-

“Hold on, letrecap and make sure I'm actually up to speed,” Isabella said, pulling a pillow closer to her chest.

“Grayson received a message from the person behind all this killing just before the shooting. But wait-before |

continue-don’t you think we should cup with a nfor this guy?”

I glanced up from the blank page in front of me, raising an eyebrow at her. “How do you even know it's a guy?”

“Because it's the obvious conclusion,” she said with a tic eye-roll. “Why would a woman be doing this? |

mean, | support women’s empowerment and all that, but this feels... unlikely plus whoever it is has a lot of

power and backing and | don’t think that a woman could wield this amount of power. Whoever this person is,

they're a master planner,” Her eyes lit up as if she had just thought of something brilliant. “I've got it!” Then,

just as quickly, she shook her head. “Nope. Never mind. | don’t got it. Back to the recap.”

| sighed, turning my attention back to the paper in front of me, scribbling down a few words that didn’t quite fit.

“Okay, so Grayson got shot, and then this guy sent another message to his phone. It said, “You're next,’ which

explains why security has tripled and why there are now five men standing outside this room like we're in a

warzone. Then there was the meeting where Grayson announced there was a mole, but you took over and the

meeting ended up going well but afterwards, Ivan told only you that he knew who the mole was and it was

Elaine?”

| hummed in response, staring at the words I'd written. They still didn’t feel right, and | was about to cross them

out when Isabella yanked the paper out of my hands.

“What could you possibly be writing that’s more important than this?!” she demanded, waving the paper in my

face. “Elaine is the freaking mole, and you didn’t tell Grayson about it?”

| let out a long sigh. “Elaine isn’t the mole. She might act suspicious sometimes, but she’s not the one feeding

information to our enemy. That's why | shut Ivan down immediately when he suggested it.”

“How are you so sure?” she asked, narrowing her eyes.

“Because Elaine's issues started with the death of her parents. It traumatized her. She's terrified of death. That's

why, even when she’s mad at Grayson, she still shows up. She doesn’t want to risk not saying goodbye to him,

something she never go to do with her parents. And she wouldn't get involved with someone who's killing

people-it goes against everything she fears.” | paused for a moment before adding, “Not to mention, she’s

Grayson’s cousin. Do you know how much power that gives her in this world? Elaine loves being at the top. She

wouldn't help someone who's hell-bent on seeing Grayson fall because that would mean she'd fall too. Now, can

| have my paper back?”

Isabella stared atfor a moment, clearly trying to process my explanation. Reluctantly, she handed the paper

back. “How do

you even know all this?”

“We were trained to understand human behavior,” | said simply. It's part of being a doctor.”

“Fine,” she said, crossing her arms. “The next thing on my recap and a very valid question-why are you so calm?

Mr. Master Planner set Grayson’s building on fire and is now going after Maria!”

“Because,” | said, crossing out another line I'd written, “Grayson and | have progressed. He informsof things

now. So, | know he’s on his way back here with Maria. She was attacked, yes but because she’s a powerful witch,

she managed to hold her ground long enough for Grayson and sof his warriors to get there. Apart from the

target on my back*”-I crumpled the paper in frustration and tossed it onto the floor, where it joined a growing pile

of rejected drafts-“I'd say everything is splendid.”

Isabella hummed thoughtfully but didn’t say anything. I looked up at her, raising an eyebrow again. “Is that all?

You're not going to recap the fact that | told Grayson | loved him?”

She waved her hand dismissively. “Oh, please. Everyone already knew that. He did too because | told him when

he was in Italy, just before your birthday.”

| froze, staring at her in disbelief. “You what?”

“That's not the point here,” she said quickly, brushing it off. “The point is, it doesn’t deserve a recap unless he

said the words back.”

| felt heat rush to my cheeks. “He didn’t, but he-”

“Yes, yes, kissed you,” she interrupted, rolling her eyes. “It was magical, and yes, you felt him say the words

through the kiss, but we need actual words, Lilian. Words!” She punctuated her point by throwing a pillow at me.

I laughed, dodging the pillow easily.

“Okay, now that I'm done recapping,” she said, stretching her arms tically, “and since, according to you,

everything is just fine despite someone trying to kill you, what are you writing” Her gaze shifted to the crumpled

papers on the floor. “What are you trying to write?”

| sighed, leaning back in my chair. “This bloody resignation letter | have to hand in tomorrow. If | go back to work,

I'll be putting the people at the hospital in danger. So now I'm on partial lockdown, with those men tracking my

every move- even when | go to the bathroom. | appreciate the effort, but still”

“It’s very frustrating,” she finished for me, nodding in agreement.

“Exactly,” | muttered, staring at the paper again. “Hey, Bels, in a formal letter, does the salutation cbefore

the heading, or is it the other way around?”

“Why are you asking me? | never listened to a word they taught in school. Check the internet-that’s what it’s for.

Now, if you'll excuse me.”

“No alcohol, Bels,” | called after her. “And Grayson’s bar is not your personal free store. Stop taking bottles from

his bar whenever you chere.”

“I know you just spoke,” she said over her shoulder, “but all | heard was ‘blah blah blah.’ Also, | wasn’t heading

to the bar-I'm hungry.”

She hopped off the bed like the overgrown child she was, and | rolled my eyes at her.

Turning back to the paper in front of me, I frowned at the mess of half-written sentences. This was going to be

harder than | thought.

As | tried to focus on the letter, my thoughts drifted back to Grayson and the chaos still surrounding us. Whoever

was behind all this wasn’t just playing games. They were escalating, and we were no closer to figuring out who

they were or what they wanted.

The sound of footsteps pulledfrom my thoughts, and | looked up to see Isabella returning with a plate of

food. She plopped down onto the bed, chewing noisily as she watchedwith curious eyes.

“You know,” she said between bites, “if you spent half as much tthinking about this letter as you do thinking

about Grayson, you'd have finished it by now.”

| hurled the pillow at her, laughing, but Isabella caught it effortlessly, her reflexes sharp as ever

“Don’t makekick you out,” | warned playfully, trying to hold back a smirk.

She rolled her eyes, the queen of defiance, and grabbed her phone from the bedside table. Her fingers danced

across the screen as she scrolled aimlessly, but then her face shifted, her brow furrowing deeply. The change in

her expression hitlike a slap.

“What is it?” | asked, still half-laughing, the remnants of my humor clinging to the air. “Veronica still giving you a

hard time?”

| expected her to grin or fire back with ssnarky comment, but instead, her silence stretched ominously. My

smile faltered. Isabella wasn’t the type to let anything bother her easily and when she didn’t crack a joke, | knew

it was serious. She glanced up from her phone, her lips pressed into a thin line.

“You know that reporter? Natalie Kingston,” she said, her voice uncharacteristically quiet.

It was like a punchline to a joke we'd told too many times. “You mean the ‘thirsty ass bitch’ always trying to stir

up trouble in our world?” | grinned, quoting her infamous nicknfor the reporter. “What did she write this

time? Another conspiracy theory about Grayson'’s ‘secret heir‘?

But Isabella didn’t smile. Not even a flicker of amusement. Instead, her eyes locked on mine, unblinking, heavy

with a truth that made the air between us thrum with tension.

Her next words dropped like a bomb, obliterating every trace of humor from the room.

“Breaking News: Cursed and Wolfless? How Grayson Blackwood’s Secret Could Crumble His Reign: The Alpha

King’s shocking truth revealed-no wolf, no power.”
