Now that he had seen Elizabeth and said what needed to be said, he was ready to go back-to the Ellison
residence, back to Caroline's side.
Caroline... don't pushaway. And don't pushtoward Elizabeth. Would she ever understand this love?
David would rather owe Elizabeth, would rather give up his own child, if it meant being with Caroline.
By the the returned to the Ellison residence, it was three in the morning.
Sitting in the car, he rolled down the window, letting the cool night air in. One hand rested lazily on the door, a
cigarette pinched between his fingers.
The ember glowed and dimmed, the ash falling in soft, silent flakes.
Only after finishing the cigarette did he head upstairs to the master bedroom.
His movements were light-so light-afraid of waking her. He simply stood at the bedside, quietly watching her
sleep.

Caroline shifted, her instincts stirring. Even half-asleep, she could feel someone watching her. Her eyelids
fluttered open.
"Ah-1"
She let out a startled cry, bolting upright in bed.
In the dim light, her face was filled with fear and helplessness, as if she had just seen a ghost.
"You..." She swallowed, her voice hoarse with sleep. It took her a moment to recognize him. "David? It's you?”
He let out a low hum of acknowledgment, his voice rough.
"You were just standing there, not making a sound? That's terrifying!" Caroline switched on the bedside lamp,
frowning. "Weren't you at the hospital?"
"I went. Now I'm back."
"If you went, you should've stayed there."
David leaned in, one knee pressing onto the bed as he tilted her chin up. "Are you mad at me?"
"No. | don't have the right to be."
His gaze darkened.
"How's Elizabeth?" she asked. "Mother and child are safe, right? No complications?"
David didn't answer.

His fingers tightened slightly, pulling her into his arms. Without another word, he lowered his head and kissed
her.
This time, he wasn't rough or forceful.
His lips barely brushed against hers-light, fleeting,
If she wanted to push him away, it would've been easy.
But... she didn't.
She simply tilted her head back, letting him kiss her gently, as if his touch could disappear with the breeze.
The emotions between them were tangled with sorrow, heavy with loss.
They loved, yet there was resentment.

David's breath brushed against her lips. "Why aren't you pushingaway?"
"Because pushing you away will only make you kissharder," Caroline said softly. "No matter what | do, | can
only go along with whatever you want."
His Adam's apple bobbed. "You're not even going to askwhat Elizabeth and | talked about?"
"Not interested." Caroline let out a small, amused laugh. "Letguess-you two even picked out a nfor the
baby?"
David's lips curled slightly. But the smirk vanished just as quickly.
It was a mocking smile.
She really believed he had gone there to keep that child.
Before he could speak, Caroline asked, "What matters more tois where we're
headed. David, have you thought about how this ends?"
David's voice was low, resolute. "There is no end for us."
We would keep entangling. This lifetime. The next. Forever.
"We've cthis far, and you still refuse to letgo..." Caroline let out a long
sigh. "What's the point?"
