Chapter 247

Rowan didn't know Xavier very well. He couldn't tell whether his reserved and introverted personality was

something Xavier had always kept hidden or his relationship had simply forced his true nature to surface. Yet, his

curiosity about Lily had skyrocketed a thousandfeld.

Lily was feeding Hayden when he arrived an hour early at the hospital.

"Dr. Blackwood!" Hazel was the first to spot him. She put down the poin her hand and stood up from the

couch before hurrying over to him. "How's my son doing now?"

"Mrs Joyner, Rowan greeted her politely. His gaze darted around. "About the treatment costs moving forward, L

Hazel tumed around and walked toward the ward before he could finish. She took the oatmeal container from

Lily's hands.

"You've been involved in Hayden's treatment the whole time. | don't quite understand all of this. Lily, you should

talk to him."

"Stay" Hayden grabbed Lily's wrist and refused to let her leave. His simple words struck her heart like a heavy

stone.

She immediately held his hand in return. "I'm not going anywhere."

Hazel had no choice but to hand the oatmeal container back to her. "Ouch! My stomach hurts! | need to use the

restroom." Then, she grabbed her phone from the couch and hurried out Rowan glanced at the restroom in the

ward and pursed his lips slightly before stepping in

Lily resumed feeding Hayden. She couldn't help but chat a little more with him. "Is the oatmeal too hot? Does it

taste good? Tellwhat you want to eat or drin I'll bring it for you next time." However, Hayden's eyes grew

vacant again. He lowered his gaze and stopped responding.

The flicker of hope in Lily's heart dimmed when she saw that. She couldn't hide the disappointment on her face.

"It's normal for the patients to go through a phase where they struggle to express themselves emotionally during

treatment. It's a good sign that he reacted even for a moment just now

"Don't be discouraged. He'll slowly get better." Rowan walked in and sat on the couch with his legs crossed.

"Dr. Blackwood, did you mention the cost of Hayden's treatment earlier? Lily's chest tightened at the thought of

the medical expenses.

"It's nothing. | misspoke earlier, Rowan said with an awkward laugh. With Hazel gone, he could finally speak

freely.

Lily pondered for a while. She glanced toward the door and smiled awkwardly. She could tell that he didn't like

Hazel However, she had a feeling he lumped her in with Hazel.

"Ms. Joyner, you seem to have a particularly close relationship with your brother." Rowan tried to probe for more

information. "Did you cover his medical bills? Wouldn't your partner have an issue with that?"

Lily repeatedly stirred the oatmeal with a spoon before saying, "I don't have a partner." she needed to start

getting used to being single.

Rowan grinned as he said, "Have you ever considered finding a partner to share the burden with?"

Lily stopped stirring. "Didn't you just imply that my partner might object to covering my brother's medical

expenses?"

Why did she look for a partner then? Was she seeking more trouble in life?

Rowan was momentarily speechless. Her logic was impeccable. He needed a moment to figure out where the

conversation had gone wrong

"| believe that someone who truly loves you wouldn't mind helping with your brother's medical bills," he said.

Lily fed Hayden the last spoonful of oatmeal and handed him a napkin. "Hayden, wipe your mouth."

Hayden remained unfazed.

She let out a soli sigh and wiped his mouth for him before she tidied up. Only then did she glance over at Rowan.

"Dr. Blackwood, shall we begin now?" Herrelationship with Rowan hadn't extended beyond Hayden's condition

yet. It was far from the point where she would discuss her private matters with him.
